Many vessel operators who choose to use re-manufactured or good used diesel propulsion engines or generators, specify the two most coveted names popular in the US , Caterpillar or Cummins. And rightfully so because of their high quality and extensive service network. But did you know , the Detroit Diesel name which is the third most popular brand , also has an extensive service network . While Detroit engines seem to have fallen out of favor with some operators , they are a very competitive alternative when it comes to used or re-manufactured engines. An equivalent Detroit engine of the same horsepower and displacement will typically cost one third less to rebuild than Cat or Cummins and should not be overlooked when considering re-power alternatives.
